Based in Bloomsbury, central London, the Competition Appeal Tribunal (the Tribunal) is a world class professional, specialist judicial body with cross-disciplinary expertise in law, economics, business and accountancy whose function is to hear and decide cases involving competition or economic regulatory issues, as well as dealing with collective actions, private actions, and urgent actions. As a Caseworker, you will gain exposure to the highly confidential legal and administrative handling of cases, from registration to final judgment and archiving. The role is to support the work of the Registrar, Referendaire and Registry teams in ensuring that Tribunal cases are conducted effectively and according to the statutory rules of procedure and the Tribunal Guide to Proceedings. The job holder will be required to carry out high level administrative duties and supportive tasks to ensure that strict timetables are adhered to and hearings are conducted in a timely fashion and in accordance with procedures.
A high level of flexibility is a key requirement for this job; deadlines for delivery and lodging of documentation are sometimes at 5.00pm therefore the need to work over and above core hours can, at times, be a regular requirement. The Tribunal is a small organisation and, as all other members of staff, the job holder will often be required to perform tasks not specifically mentioned in their job description or that are normally carried out by other teams or staff within the organisation. Office cover is required between 9.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Registry cover is on staggered hours.
Experience and Skills
The successful candidate would ideally have some administration skills and be able to present themselves in professional manner. They must have excellent communication to deal with High Court Judges, Tribunal members and staff. Regular contacts include some very high level competition lawyers and top law firms, as well as other external tribunal users. The job holder must be a good team player, and able to use their own initiative.
Principal duties of the post will be:
- Undertaking all casework duties involved in handling all cases effectively and in accordance with legal requirements and agreed procedures.
- Maintaining both electronic and paper case filing systems and ensuring hearings go ahead as planned.
- Arranging internal hearing logistics (throughout the UK), while ensuring that appropriate security measures are in place and staff are available for the required postings. On some occasions, it may be necessary for hearings to be heard off-site which may require overnight stays.
- Supporting the Referendaire and Registry teams in dealing with general queries from legal representatives and members of the public about the status of cases, maintaining high levels of confidentiality at all times.
- General office support, including photocopying, post opening, labeling, scanning, registering and filing of documents both in hard copy and electronically.
- Court usher duties on a rota basis.
- Extensive manual handling of boxes of case files.

Desirable attributes
- Experience of working in the judicial system, law firm or similar environment.
- Experience in administrative role.
