The President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s (CAT) term of office ends on 4 November 2024. A Judicial Appointments Commission competition to appoint a new CAT President will be announced shortly. The Lord Chancellor has appointed Sir Peter Roth as acting CAT President until a new President is appointed.

The programme for the day consisted of four separate panel-led sessions, each of which was informed by a series of draft papers that had been circulated ahead of the conference.

The Lord Chancellor has appointed The Honourable Mr Justice Marcus Smith to be President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal with effect from 5 November 2021.
Sir Marcus Smith replaces The Honourable Mr Justice Roth whose appointment as President of the Competition Appeal Tribunal ended on 4 November 2021. Mr Justice Roth will return to the High Court (Chancery Division) and will continue to sit as a Chairman of the Tribunal.

The President and his colleagues are greatly saddened to report that Marion Simmons, one of the first chairmen of the Tribunal died on 2 May 2008. She had been undergoing treatment for cancer.
